Danny Trejo Presents Chicano Soul Shop Vol. 1
From a prolific acting career in Hollywood to owning taco restaurants and doughnut shops, Danny Trejo is now dipping his toes in the music industry by unveiling his own record label called Trejo’s Music, Billboard can exclusively reveal.
The Mexican-American actor has partnered with Silent Giant Entertainment president and producer, Edward “E-Dub” Rios, and artist and BashTown Music CEO, Baby Bash, to give life to his first album dubbed Danny Trejo Presents Chicano Soul Shop Vol. 1. The record features music from established artists such as Frankie J, Baby Bash and Chiquis Rivera to emerging artists such as Tarah New and Trish Toledo.
“I want to support new talents,” Trejo told Billboard over the phone. “In about three to four months, we’re hoping to host an open audition for new talent,” he notes, emphasizing that the sole reason he launched his own record label was to help emerging artists.
E-Dub adds, “We want to continue the mission that we’ve been dedicated to for decades, that’s kicking down doors and creating opportunities for good people through music and culture.”
With a radio show format, where Trejo entertains listeners with an anecdote before each track, the album is home to 12 songs that fuse the best of Chicano music and soulful melodies. As Baby Bash assures, it’s “bringing some saucy musical class to the music scene! Chicano soul style!”
Danny Trejo Presents Chicano Soul Shop Vol. 1 drops on Father’s Day (June 16), a holiday that Trejo cherishes on the regular. “I think one of God’s blessings is being a father and I think on this record I even say, ‘Pay your child support, cabrones!'” he jokes. “Every day is a blessed day for me just to be a father.”
The set, which Trejo describes as “good cruising music,” will be available June 16 for streaming and download on Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon Music, Tidal and Deezer.
“Every good thing that has happened to me has happened directly to help someone else,” Trejo says of his record label’s mission. "I really think that’s what life is all about.”
